Scandinavia has exported more pop than almost anywhere its size. From ABBA to Max Martin's Stockholm hit factory, the region's writers perfected the big, clean chorus. Scandinavian electropop added synthesizers and a darker, more personal edge, most famously in Robyn's Body Talk, where heartbreak lyrics sit on top of club beats.
Artists like Röyksopp, Lykke Li, Tove Lo, Sigrid and AURORA carried the sound forward, and Iceland added its own strain through Björk and a scene that treats pop as something close to art. Common threads are minimal, icy production, melancholy lyrics and euphoric, dance-ready choruses.
