Conscious hip-hop is rap built around ideas: social commentary, history, faith, family and self-examination. Its roots run from Gil Scott-Heron and the spoken-word poets through Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest and Mos Def, to OutKast's Aquemini, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and J. Cole.
In the South, especially Atlanta, the conscious tradition has always shared space with trap. Killer Mike, JID and OutKast showed that heavy 808s and serious writing can live on the same record. Today's conscious rap is less preachy than it once was and more personal, with verses about therapy, fatherhood and money as often as politics.
Kairo West's debut album Baldwin Bus Receipt comes out of that Atlanta line: eighteen tracks of trap drums and gospel samples under a baritone that takes its cues from James Baldwin as much as from rap.
