Deep house grew out of Chicago house in the mid-1980s, when producers like Larry Heard slowed the tempo, added jazz and soul chords, and let the groove breathe. It still sits around 118 to 125 BPM, a little slower than most club house, and it trades big drops for long builds, rounded sub-bass and chords that hang in the air.
The 2026 version sits between two worlds. On one side are melodic, emotional producers like Lane 8, Ben Böhmer and RÜFÜS DU SOL, whose tracks work as well on headphones as in a club. On the other are the minimal, hypnotic sets of Solomun and the Berlin scene, where a single loop can carry ten minutes. Vocals tend to be chopped and used as texture rather than sung as a lead.
Nova Driftwood's debut album Tide Clock is built in that space: sixteen tracks of warm analog pads, vinyl crackle and four-on-the-floor kicks, organized as one long arc from sunrise to the end of the night.
