Desert rock comes from the Palm Desert and Joshua Tree area of Southern California in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when bands played generator parties out in the open desert because there were no clubs to play. Kyuss defined the sound: detuned, fuzz-heavy guitars, a rolling low end and long, repetitive grooves.
Kyuss members went on to form Queens of the Stone Age, who brought desert rock to the mainstream, while bands like Fu Manchu, Masters of Reality and later Royal Blood, The Kills and Wolfmother drew on the same mix of groove, fuzz and swagger. It overlaps with stoner rock but tends to be tighter and more song-focused.
Viper Junction, a band out of Joshua Tree fronted by an alto singer, carries that sound on their debut album Gasoline Hymn: sixteen tracks of highway rock with walls of distortion and choruses built for a stadium.
