Neo-soul arrived in the late 1990s with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, pulling R&B back toward live instruments, jazz harmony and the warmth of 1970s soul. Atmospheric R&B is its moodier descendant: slower tempos, reverb-heavy production and vocals recorded close and soft, as if the singer is in the room.
Artists like SZA, Jhené Aiko, Solange, FKA twigs and Jorja Smith defined the modern sound, mixing hip-hop drums with ambient pads and leaving silence in the arrangement. It is music for late evenings, long drives and low light.
