What is “Velvet” about?
"Velvet" is the album's most suspended love song, set at a windowpane while the city holds its breath and candlelight does what daylight won't. The narrator doesn't need answers when the question feels this good, and the chorus describes a lover as a language she can't write but understands fluently by feeling. As the title track and final song on Velvet, it closes the record by asking to be held "in the in-between" and let the moment stay.
Velvet lyrics
Silk against the windowpane the city holding breath
Your fingerprints on everything I haven't touched yet
Candlelight is doing what the daylight won't confess
Drawing me in closer to the edges of your depth
Something in the frequency of how you say my name
Turns the ordinary into something I can't tame
I don't need the answers when the question feels this good
Rather stay suspended in the spaces that we could
Velvet on my skin tonight
Every whisper pulling tight
You're the language I can't write
But I'm fluent in the feeling velvet
Velvet velvet
Traces on the pillowcase like constellations drawn
Every breath a conversation happening till dawn
You don't have to say the words the silence knows our song
Gravity is optional when this is where we belong
Nothing artificial in the way the tension bends
Where the wanting starts is where the understanding ends
I don't need the answers when the question feels this good
Rather stay suspended in the spaces that we could
Velvet on my skin tonight
Every whisper pulling tight
You're the language I can't write
But I'm fluent in the feeling velvet
Velvet velvet
Closer than the breath between the words we'll never say
Hold me in the in-between and let the moment stay
Velvet on my skin tonight
Every whisper pulling tight
You're the language I can't write
But I'm fluent in the feeling velvet
Velvet velvet
Velvet mmm velvet
Ooh velvet
