What is “Twilight” about?
"Twilight" is a meditation on the hour between day and dark, when a purple sky bleeds into indigo and the narrator sits with questions she knows she will never answer. Rather than looking for resolution, she finds peace where shadow and light meet, keeping company with candles, incense and stars. The thirteenth track on Velvet is its most contemplative, calling that in-between "the most beautiful place" she has ever been.
Twilight lyrics
Mmm, twilight
Between the day and dark
Purple sky is bleeding into indigo
Sitting with the questions that I'll never know
Candles on the windowsill are burning low
Time is moving different when you let it go
Somewhere between the ending and the start
Found a sacred space inside my heart
Quiet isn't empty when it's full of peace
Sometimes letting go is the release
In the twilight, in the twilight
Where the shadows and the light make peace
In the twilight, gentle twilight
That's where I find my sweetest release
Between the dark and dawn I breathe
In the twilight
Stars are writing stories I've been trying to read
Every constellation is a planted seed
Sitting with the silence like an old old friend
Nothing needs a reason, nothing needs to end
Incense curling upward like a prayer in smoke
Sacred little moments that the universe spoke
I don't need the answers when the question's this sweet
Life is just a rhythm and I'm finding the beat
In the twilight, in the twilight
Where the shadows and the light make peace
In the twilight, gentle twilight
That's where I find my sweetest release
Between the dark and dawn I breathe
In the twilight
Ooh, the in-between
Is the most beautiful place I've ever been
Not the day, not the night
Just the space where everything feels right
In the twilight, in the twilight
Where the shadows and the light make peace
In the twilight, gentle twilight
That's where I find my sweetest release
Between the dark and dawn I breathe
In the twilight
Twilight, twilight
Mmm, so peaceful
