What is “Hollowpoint” about?

"Hollowpoint" is a revenge song built on gun imagery, sung by someone who stayed silent too long and now loads old grievances one round at a time. Having buried her kindness "six feet deep," she reveals she kept the receipts and the scars, and the chorus declares she is done being careful or small. Its warning is that quiet never meant asleep. At track nine, it opens the back half of Gasoline Hymn on its most openly confrontational lyric.

Hollowpoint lyrics

Load the chamber slow, I been waiting all week
Finger on the trigger of every word I don't speak
You drew first blood, now the silence is cheap
I bury my kindness six feet deep

I am the storm you called down
I am the wire pulled tight
I am the fuse in the ground
Don't tell me to be polite

Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
Straight through the lie
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
Watch the pretty ones die
I am done being careful, done being small
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
I'm taking it all

You thought the quiet meant I was asleep
You thought the soft thing couldn't bite deep
Count your teeth, count your friends, count the cost
Every inch of me you thought you bought

I am the storm you called down
I am the wire pulled tight
I am the fuse in the ground
Don't tell me to be polite

Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
Straight through the lie
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
Watch the pretty ones die
I am done being careful, done being small
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
I'm taking it all

I kept the receipts, I kept the scars
I kept the map of who you are
Every favor, every lie
Loaded one round at a time

Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
Straight through the lie
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
No more alibi
I am done being careful, done being small
Hollowpoint, hollowpoint
I'm taking it all
