What is “Sunday Morning Sober” about?
"Sunday Morning Sober" follows a man in early recovery, waking to a clean kitchen, black coffee and church bells he never noticed through the haze. He carries a chip from a church-basement meeting and a voicemail from his daughter, their first contact in a year, that he has played fourteen times without answering. Refusing to promise he's fixed, he settles for steady hands on the porch, and by the final chorus he resolves to call her back. Twelfth on The Last Porch Light, it is the album's morning after.
Sunday Morning Sober lyrics
Woke up to a cardinal on the windowsill
First time in years the room ain't spinning
Coffee's black and the kitchen's clean
And the morning light don't feel like punishment
I can hear the church bells from the Baptist down the road
Never noticed them before through the haze
But they sound like something trying to reach me
Through all the fog of all those wasted days
Sunday morning sober
And the world looks different when you're clear
The sky ain't just the sky, it's a second chance
Hanging right above me crystal clear
Sunday morning sober
And I don't know if I deserve this peace
But I'm sitting on the porch with my hands steady
And that's enough for now, that's enough for me
My daughter called last Wednesday, first time in a year
I didn't have the nerve to answer yet
But I saved the voicemail, played it fourteen times
Her voice sounds like her mama's and it wrecked me
There's a chip in my pocket from a church basement room
Where strangers told me things I needed hearing
One day at a time sounds like a cliché
Until it's the only thing between you and disappearing
Sunday morning sober
And the world looks different when you're clear
The sky ain't just the sky, it's a second chance
Hanging right above me crystal clear
Sunday morning sober
And I don't know if I deserve this peace
But I'm sitting on the porch with my hands steady
And that's enough for now, that's enough for me
I ain't gonna promise I'm fixed
I ain't gonna swear I won't fall
But this morning the birds are singing
And I can hear them
Lord, I can finally hear them all
Sunday morning sober
And the world looks different when you're clear
The sky ain't just the sky, it's a mercy
Hanging right above me year by year
Sunday morning sober
And I'm gonna call my daughter back
Gonna tell her daddy's trying
Gonna tell her that's a fact
That's enough for now
That's enough for me
