What is “Whiskey, Women, and Wildflowers” about?

"Whiskey, Women, and Wildflowers" is a good-time weekend song built around what the narrator calls his only holy trinity: a little burn, a little beauty and something growing free. With twenty dollars in his pocket, he two-steps through the sawdust with Jolene, a girl with wildflowers tattooed on her shoulder and wrist, and admits he has chased all three since seventeen without catching a single one. At track three on The Last Porch Light, it closes a rowdy opening trio before "Sawmill Road" turns serious.

Whiskey, Women, and Wildflowers lyrics

Friday night, the sun's going down like a house on fire
Got my boots on, hat cocked back, and my spirits getting higher
Told the boys I'd meet 'em where the neon meets the dirt
Where the jukebox plays too loud and the women wear those skirts
I got twenty in my pocket and a grin I can't explain
Every weekend I go broke but I'd do it all again

Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
That's the only holy trinity I need
A little burn, a little beauty, a little something growing free
I've been chasing all three since I was seventeen
And I ain't caught a single one but lord they sure caught me
Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
Yeah that's the good life guaranteed

Met a girl named Jolene with a laugh like thunder rolling
She said buy me something strong and I'll keep your night from stalling
We two-stepped through the sawdust till our boots wore paper thin
And when the band played their last song we said let's start again
She had wildflowers tattooed on her shoulder and her wrist
I said darling you're the kind of trouble I've been trying not to miss

Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
That's the only holy trinity I need
A little burn, a little beauty, a little something growing free
I've been chasing all three since I was seventeen
And I ain't caught a single one but lord they sure caught me
Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
Yeah that's the good life guaranteed

Now I know some folks go chasing money
And some folks chase the fame
But give me a back road, a bonfire
And a girl who knows my name
That's all I ever wanted
That's all I'll ever need

Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
That's the only holy trinity I need
A little burn, a little beauty, a little something growing free
I've been chasing all three and they've been chasing me
And on a night like tonight I'd say we're running even
Whiskey, women, and wildflowers
That's the good life
That's the real life
That's the only life for me

Yeah, whiskey, women, and wildflowers
Somebody pour me another round
