What is “Neon and Nowhere” about?

"Neon and Nowhere" is a snapshot of a night at the Broken Spoke Saloon, where the neon sign is missing two letters and the regulars fill every corner: Jenny dancing on the bar, Big Earl buying rounds, Tommy playing "Turkey in the Straw" double time on his fiddle and a bartender with a PhD in literature. Monday's bills and alarms are waiting, but for one night the bar is the center of the universe. Track nine on The Last Porch Light, it lightens the mood after "Her Name Was June."

Neon and Nowhere lyrics

Saturday night at the Broken Spoke Saloon
Dollar drafts and a band that's playing too loud
Jenny's dancing on the bar in her cowboy boots
And Big Earl's buying rounds for the crowd
The jukebox lost a fight with the drummer's kick
So now we got live music whether we like it or not
And the neon sign outside is missing two letters
But everybody knows the spot

Neon and nowhere, that's where I'll be
Where the beer is cold and the band plays free
Where nobody asks you where you been
Or where you're supposed to be tomorrow
Just neon and nowhere and a Friday night
That spills into a Saturday alright
Raise your glass to the beautiful mess
Of not having anywhere better to go

Tommy brought his fiddle and he's three sheets gone
Playing Turkey in the Straw double time
The bartender's got a PhD in literature
But she pours a better whiskey than a rhyme
There's a trucker and a preacher shooting pool
And a girl writing postcards at the end of the bar
And the whole place smells like peanut shells and freedom
And nobody's going very far

Neon and nowhere, that's where I'll be
Where the beer is cold and the band plays free
Where nobody asks you where you been
Or where you're supposed to be tomorrow
Just neon and nowhere and a Friday night
That spills into a Saturday alright
Raise your glass to the beautiful mess
Of not having anywhere better to go

And I know come Monday the world starts up again
The bills and the bosses and the alarm at six
But tonight this bar is the center of the universe
And we're all exactly where we need to exist

Neon and nowhere, that's where I'll be
Where the beer is cold and the band plays free
Where nobody asks you where you been
Or where you're supposed to be tomorrow
Just neon and nowhere, that's all I need
A barstool and a reason to believe
That the best nights of your life
Don't need a reservation

Don't need a reservation
